Before joining UC Santa Cruz in January 2025, Zhicong spent more than 8 years in Research and Development within the healthcare industry. From 2014 to 2016, he served as a Research Fellow at the CT Clinic Innovation Center at Mayo Clinic. He completed his PhD at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in collaboration with the Utah Center for Advanced Imaging Research and Siemens Healthineers. Zhicong’s research focuses on advanced X-ray imaging algorithm development and system innovation for applications in diagnostic radiology, interventional radiology and radiation oncology. He has extensive hands-on experience in premium CT scanners (including photon-counting CT), helical cone-beam CT scanners, and advanced C-arm systems. His expertise includes advanced CT image reconstruction, computer simulation and modeling, physics correction, artifacts mitigation, imaging chain design, scan protocol design and image quality assessment. Zhicong has published over 40 articles and holds 20 US/PCT patents. He is a recipient of the President Award from Accuray (Team, 2022) and the Rotblat Medal from Physics in Medicine and Biology (2021).
